True to its name, the 1839 "Drapery" Half Dollar is distinctive for its portrayal of Liberty with flowing fabric, the first of its kind. In this rendition, Liberty proudly sits with drapery, a design modifications from the same year 1839 No Drapery. Interestingly, there are more survivors despite a lower mintage for the No Drapery Type 1 50C, yet the No Drapery in MS65 will cost approximately between $125,000-$200,000. For the Drapery type, the most sought-after Mint State example grade lies in MS-63, with only 12 such coins in existence. As you ascend to higher grades, these treasures become increasingly scarce, with only 3 rare MS-65 specimens known, we believe 1 is a duplicate. Two graded examples exist finer and that only at 65+, but none match the eye appeal and visual allure of this coin. This significant 'Drapery' issue stands out as a crucial date and type coin offering for collectors. The obverse showcases chestnut brown, crimson red, aquamarine blue, and light shades of purple. On the reverse, lively russet brown toning is accented by blues around the edge. Notably, there are no signs of the reverse die cracks present in some examples, and the coin is exceptionally well-preserved. Even among advanced collectors and numismatic enthusiasts, this Liberty Seated Half Dollar is unlikely to be surpassed anytime soon. Only one auction comparable exists in the past decade which is perfectly for a PCGS non-CAC example that just sold most recently for $20,400 04/24 SB. Comparatively, this coin is unquestionably superior and has the IT factor.
