1839 Silly Head is an exceptional high-end example of this short-lived Coronet Head subtype, displaying a sharply executed strike, superior surface quality, and deeply appealing early-copper coloration. Rich and even, enhanced by subtle flashes of orange-red and underlying mint-red in the protected recesses. The coin features warm reddish-brown centers accented by soft rose-gold and faint orange highlights at the rims, while the high points settle into a velvety chocolate tone. The surfaces remain smooth, satiny, and wonderfully stable throughout, and an even, flowing cartwheel luster that confirms both originality and top-tier preservation but beyond that we are also not sure why this coin isn’t a MS67 - it is absolutely flawless. As one of the most charismatic and sought-after varieties of the year - the Silly Head subtype was struck for only part of 1839, and in MS66 BN with CAC approval, this example sits at the threshold of the condition census. With a survival estimate of just 2,000 pieces, a PCGS population of 9/2, and an elite CAC population of 4/1—with the last CAC example realizing $10,800 04/21, $14,100 09/18 LE and $12,600 06/18 GO, and a MS67 CAC today impounded — this coin offers a rare combination of technical excellence, originality, and elevated eye appeal, representing one of the finest opportunities within the entire late Matron Head series.
