The 1839 $10 Type of 1840 also known as Small Letters Liberty eagle is an important Key Date, extremely rare and undervalued issue. With only 12,447 minted, about 55 are estimated to exist today. It is both the first year of the redesign of Liberty as we know it that span till 1907, albeit with a slight redesign with the motto in 1866, and also the second year of the Liberty Head series. This date is significantly scarcer than the 1839 Type of '38 or the 1838 $10. With a Price Guide of $9,000 and no comp except for over a decade ago at VF30, even in surrounding grades in VF35 the last sale was 5 years ago, but 3 grades lower in an NGC holder one sold $4,560 01/23 HA. Beside the rarity, the coin has medium green-gold and orange hues with no detracting hits. It also has ample details for a VF30 with claims to a higher grade and superior eye appeal to more than 95% of all 1839 $10 Small Letters. As the inaugural issue of the type, this is a major rarity in the US coin market and a must-have for any serious collector and type coin collector.
