One of the most popular in demand quarter eagle. This 1838 Charlotte $2.5 has multiple wow factors - 1) this date has the lowest mintage, 2) it has the fewest number of auction appearance for the type, 3) it is a first year issue, 4) it has an obverse mint-mark, 5) one of two Classic head quarter eagles... the list goes on. Among other reasons, there were only 7,880 struck, 150 are known today. Few are cac (approximately one cac per grade! as this pop 1, but more importantly the toning on this vf is unique an exhibits deep red orange near the peripheries surrounding the device. 1838-C $2.5 strike is also absolutely interesting, all mint marks will show clear redoubling, as the engraver first punched the C too low. Many 1838-C have die cracks on the reverse as this does at 10am, and a dip on the face and immediately on the reverse, all adding great appeal to an issue. You wont find one of these easily. There is 1 apr for f15, 1 in vf20 14 years ago, no apr for vf25 or vf30 at either grading house, the pattern goes on. Only relevant comp is a pcgs xf45 cac for $9,400 that did not have this unique gold toning.
