The 1838-C Classic Head quarter eagle is a landmark issue in United States gold coinage, representing the first year of operation at the Charlotte Mint. From a limited mintage of just 7,880 pieces only a small fraction of examples survive today, and coins approaching Mint State preservation are especially elusive within the series much less a CAC example. This example retains a pleasing orange gold appearance with ample luster through out the fields. The strike is impressively bold for the issue. The design is spectacular and one of the most coveted gold issues with the C beautifully seen on the obverse not to mention the HM-1 for the re-punched mintmark. The most recent CAC-approved example realized 3 years ago - $32,400 in May 2023, while current market references list the PCGS Price Guide at $32,500 with non-CAC PCGS today offered on the market for approximately $30,000. CAC Price Guide at $36,000 for a CAC pop 7 with only 3 finer.
