HM-2 (R.3). The 1838 Classic Head half eagle represents the final year of a short-lived and historically important type struck from 1834 through 1838, marking the close of an era in early U.S. gold coinage. With an estimated survival of approximately 700 examples across all grades, this issue is seldom encountered at higher Mint State levels, particularly with fully original surfaces and strong overall eye appeal. Both sides exhibit dazzling, satiny mint luster that remains vibrant beneath a fully original yellow-gold skin. The strike is bold and confident throughout with tremendous eye appeal. Notably, no CAC-approved examples have appeared at auction in higher grades for 6 years. The current CAC Price Guide lists the issue at $18,500, with a CAC population of just 5 approved examples and 5 finer, underscoring the select nature of this offering within the final-year Classic Head half eagle series.
