Dazzling and alluring would be a fitting description to this 1838 $5 MS61 Classic Head specimen. This piece displays iridescent, bright superb yellow-gold surfaces with strong luster. The details of the strike are flawless and are exceptionally acute, minimal marks can be noticed and are unhampered to the design and quality.

A genuinely well-struck specimen with an HM-1, a Rarity 3, and one of the rarest for the dates. A scarce Mint State specimen that was issued in the final year of this short-lived design type for the 1838 Classic Head Half Eagle. Keep in mind the 1838 half eagle is already rare in all uncirculated grades and becomes a rarity in GEM. Notwithstanding, this fabulous piece could be said to beat most of them.

Last auction record for MS61 was also an HM-1 but a non-CAC which sold for $6,000 04/22 ST, while similarly an MS62 NGC HM-1 also a non-CAC  last sold for $7,200 01/22 ST. With a PCGS POP of 1 and 2 finer for the HM-1 variety, this 1838 MS61 HM-1 CAC piece would be a wonder to be in possession of as a Type.
