The surfaces are notably smooth and pleasing in hand, lending the coin exceptional eye appeal that rivals many lower-end Mint State examples. As the final year of the Classic Head design, the 1838 carries significant type importance, and it also rivals the 1837 as one of the scarcest Philadelphia Mint issues of the series, with only two known die marriages, both of comparable rarity.
