HM-2 (R.3) An unquestionably original 1838 Classic Head Half Eagle, certified AU55 by PCGS with coveted CAC approval, this premium quality example is boldly struck and bathed with vibrant orange-gold color. The surfaces are notably smooth and pleasing in hand, lending the coin exceptional eye appeal that rivals many lower-end Mint State examples. As the final year of the Classic Head design, the 1838 carries significant type importance, and it also rivals the 1837 as one of the scarcest Philadelphia Mint issues of the series, with only two known die marriages, both of comparable rarity. With an estimated survival of approximately 700 pieces, this issue is scarce in all grades and becomes genuinely elusive in any Uncirculated designation, making this CAC-approved AU55 a particularly compelling offering. PCGS Price Guide value of $4,500, whilst last PCGS AU55 sold for $4,200 07/25 HA, and more recently a AU55 NGC CAC for $4,111 02/26 GC which pales in comparison to this piece
