The 1838 Liberty Head Gold Eagle has maintained its status as a coveted and sought-after coin for a considerable period in numismatics. Scarce across all conditions, high-grade examples are often beyond the reach of many collectors. Out of a mintage of 7,200, only 85 specimens are known to exist in all grades. Notably, the 1838 Eagle marks the first issuance of its kind since the 1804 Eagle, following a hiatus of 34 years. This makes it a significant historical piece for collectors at all levels.

This 1838 Liberty Head Gold Eagle, encased in a PCGS OGH holder, presents a choice VF example. Despite circulation, it retains pleasing design details with minimal abrasions. By today’s grading standards we could easily see it in a VF35 holder. It offers a chance to acquire a low-mintage, low-survival rate PCGS Liberty Head Eagle displaying strong detail. With a PCGS population of 4 and only 83 finer specimens, its rarity is evident. Notably, there has been no sale in VF25 since 2014, when this exact coin changed hands a decade ago. $5,288 07/14 HA.
