This 1837 Capped Bust Half Dollar represents the final year of the series and is classified as the Type 2 Reeded Edge variant, distinguished by the denomination "50 CENTS" on the reverse. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint shortly after the introduction of steam-powered coining presses in 1836, this issue reflects the Mint’s transition to more precise and uniform manufacturing. The new technology replaced manual screw presses and marked a significant leap forward in strike consistency, planchet uniformity, and counterfeit resistance. The 1837 Reeded Edge halves were among the first coins struck under these improved conditions, and this CAC-approved AU55 example clearly benefitted from careful preservation from the outset. Thick satiny luster remains throughout the coin which makes it difficult to capture the image of the true color in hand. The obverse is wrapped in original steel-gray toning, gently warmed by golden-bronze and olive highlights around Liberty’s cheek and cap, with faint lavender and amber at the borders. The reverse exhibits hues of dusky gold, rose-champagne, and auburn, accented by hints of blue-violet near the legends—suggestive of album storage. Detail remains sharp throughout, with only light, grade-consistent friction on the eagle’s breast and Liberty’s highest points. The fields are notably clean and retain subtle frost in protected areas, reinforcing the coin’s originality and eye appeal. The most recent CAC-approved AU55 selling for $960 12/24 HA and an AU55 non-CAC realizing $1,620 04/25 HA, neither of which was toned nor as nice.
