Important issue, 1836 50C Reeded Edge has perhaps one of the most historical elements going on for this short 2 years type coin. Known both as an important Transitional Type from Type 2 to Type 3 when the reverse denomination was changed from  "50 Cents" on the reverse to "Half Dol," it is also the First Steam Pressed Coin that was circulated. A major change from the manual pressing ability previously seen. With a paltry officially mintage of 1,200 pieces, some have suggested it can be as high as 5,000, which perhaps seems more likely. Though no one knows exactly, this mystery also adds to this coins appeal and remains rare in all grades. It is the first year of a short type and is sought after ferociously in AU and higher. In fact, from an absolute stand point, it has a lower mintage than even 1794, 1815, and other later dates. To add even further interest in this coin, the 1836 Reeded Edge half dollar was once listed in J. Hewitt Judd's United States Pattern, Trial, and Experimental Pieces as Judd-57 as a pattern piece and remained as such for most of the 19th century. The present example thus graded AU58 NGC CAC is the perfect type coin that is seldom for sale. Even an AU50 CAC would cost approximately $5,000 today if available. With rich purple hues on the fields surrounded by shades of pastel, we dare say that this coin is undervalued. Excellent eye appeal and deep toning that difficult to capture. With a CAC Price Guide of $10,100 and no sale in the past 6 years, the only relevant comp is a a lower grade NON-CAC PCGS AU55 that sold for $11,750 in 2022. We cannot recommend this purchase enough. Should you wish we can also have this coin graded by CACG complimentary.
