This 1834 $5 Classic Head, Plain 4 half eagle represents the first year of the redesigned Classic Head series, struck in large numbers following the transition from the earlier Capped Head motif. While a substantial 657,460 pieces were produced, most entered circulation and remained there, resulting in limited preservation at the higher grades; the survival estimate today stands at roughly 1,750 examples, with truly Choice Mint State pieces being scarce and premium-certified examples even more elusive. Like all other $5 Classic Head, these become incredibly rare at MS63 or finer. Current references list the PCGS Price Guide at $18,500 and the CACG/CAC Price Guide at $19,000 with no public auctions; in fact because of that this date has just had its CAC CPG value adjusted upwards after years of being undervalued in higher grade. This example showcases a vibrant golden appearance with abundant luster. A small hit in the right obverse field holds this coin back from a higher grade, else it has the look and luster of a gem in hand. Overall, it a compelling representative of the Classic Head design and an excellent opportunity for both series and type specialists.
