The 1831 $2.50 Capped Bust quarter eagle represents the Reduced Small Diameter Type 3 issue and belongs to one of the most demanding gold series in all of United States numismatics. The Capped Head Left quarter eagles dated from 1821 through 1834 encompass two distinct formats, with the earlier large-diameter coins struck without a close collar and the later reduced-diameter issues, including this example, produced from 1829 to 1834 using a close collar. All dates of the Reduced Diameter type are elusive, as production levels remained modest due to the half eagle being the preferred denomination for gold depositors at the time. The 1831 issue was struck to a mintage of just 4,520 pieces, with an estimated surviving population of approximately 137 examples today, making it a very difficult date across all grades and particularly challenging in higher levels of preservation. This example would serve admirably as either a date representative or as a cornerstone example for the type, further underscored by its limited CAC population of just three examples and four finer. The coin displays an abundance of luster for a MS63. Truly lustrous example that is limited by light minute hairlines. A different 1831 $2.5 MS63 PCGS CAC sold for $57,600 06/25 HA which was a muted coin As a Condition Census–level survivor for this demanding issue, it stands as a compelling acquisition for an advanced cabinet and is unlikely to remain available for long.
