1830 Capped Head Left Half Eagle BD-1 Rarity-6 Large D AU-50+ (PCGS) CAC was produced during a time when gold coins were often exported or melted due to fluctuations in gold and silver values, which makes surviving examples more elusive today. More importantly this issue is extremely rare and historically significant early gold issue for the Capped Bust Small Diameter where finding an example under 6 figures much less CAC is extremely rare regardless of any date from 1829 to 1834. A vivid and attractive Choice AU example, the surfaces are richly original and bathed in warm orange-gold hues, accented by subtle honey-olive undertones and ample remnants of a frosty finish that are most evident in the protected areas around the devices. The obverse displays pleasing definition through Liberty’s hair, cap folds, and facial features, with only minor softness at isolated high points and a few stars, entirely consistent with the type and grade, while the reverse shows the Heraldic Eagle with suitably bold detail and the diagnostic Large D denomination that distinguishes the BD-1 pairing. The fields are well composed and free of any sizable or distracting marks, contributing to strong overall eye appeal. Of the two reverses used in 1830, the Large D BD-1 is among the rarest, with Bass and Dannreuther estimating just 25 to 35 surviving examples. With a PCGS population of 1 finer out of 17 graded and only 6 CAC-approved examples in all grades. Today this coin stands with a PCGS Price Guide value of $87,500; however, the most recent and relevant comp was a AU55 PCGS CAC for $122,000 01/26 HA.
