1827 $5 MS62+ CACG EX PARMELEE/CHAPMAN/KING FAROUK

The 1827 Capped Head half eagle, BD-1 (R.6), is one of the great rarities of early United States gold coinage, with a reported mintage of 24,913 pieces from a single die marriage and an estimated survival of only about 35 examples in all grades. Unlike many contemporary gold issues, most 1827 half eagles saw little to no circulation, with the majority ultimately melted, explaining the absence of lower-grade certified examples and the extreme rarity across all levels of preservation. This pop 1 MS62+ CACG is an exceptional representative and as a result is well pedigreed to Parmelee, Chapman, King Farouk, Newcomer and Col. Green and a few other major collections tracing its history to all the way back to the 1860s. Displaying rich antique gold coloration with deep orange hues accented by subtle olive undertones that evenly blanket both sides. The strike is full and well executed and the surfaces are notably well preserved for the grade, showing fewer marks than typically encountered, with only minor contact near the left portrait. A soft, underlying luster remains evident beneath the toning, enhancing the coin’s depth and originality over its proof like surface. No MS62+ has ever sold; however the ex Bass non-CAC MS63 sold for $132,000 08/23 HA which in our opinion is comparable to this CAC example. This piece stands as a rare opportunity to acquire a high-quality example of a celebrated early gold rarity, a coin that seldom appears on the market and represents an important cornerstone for advanced collectors of the series
