PCGS COIN OF THE MONTH FEATURED ARTICLE:

1826 $2.5 is the Single Rarest Business Strike Capped Bust Quarter Eagle. With the lowest mintage for the series at just 760 pieces only 32 are estimated today in all grades, though 17-18 unique examples have been accounted for most of which are in XF-AU range.

In the early 1800’s, the United States started moving away from a system of coinage based on Spanish and British currency to a decimal system based on the dollar as we know it today. The Quarter Eagle, along with other gold coins produced by the Philadelphia Mint in the early 19th century, was part of this transition after a long 13 years hiatus which restarted in 1821 with the Capped Bust Quarter Eagle.

Capped Bust Quarter Eagle have been long under-valued for several reasons:

1) Short 5-year dates to collect: 1821, 1824/1, 1825, 1826/6, and 1827

2) Because of its high intrinsic metal value, most examples were melted

3) All have low mintages under 4,500 pieces, making all examples very scarce and difficult to find with original surface

Beyond the rarity of the type, 1826/6 $2.5, previously known as 1826/’5’, as one would expect close to no sale exists and very few have been offered. NGC shows 9 grading events, whilst PCGS shows 22 for a total of 31 pieces certified in ALL grades according to their respective Population Report. Not accounting for duplicates and resubmissions, we believe closer to 18 unique examples. Of all examples known today, 5 have been CAC approved. Interestingly, both the lowest approved CAC and the highest approved CAC 1826/6 $2.5, Paradime Coins has been humbled to have had handled both. We placed the AU50 PCGS CAC this year with a collector after the coin was off the market for 14 years, and now are pleased to offer the highest CAC for sale - A CAC Pop 2/0 PCGS 2/1 1826/6 $2.5 MS61 PCGS CAC. The remaining 3 CAC examples include 2 in AU58, one of which sold a decade ago for $61,688 01/13 SB and one other MS61 graded by PCGS.

The Top 3 Condition Census includes:

1) Ex: Joseph J. Mickley; William Sumner Appleton; W. Elliot Woodward (privately, 1/23/1883); Garrett Collection (Bowers and Ruddy, 3/1980), lot 746. The Harry W. Bass, Jr. Core Collection, Part II. MS63 PCGS
2) Tied, The Present Example and another. MS61 PCGS CAC.
3) Tied, Smithsonian MS60 and another. MS60 PCGS

We respectful believe the Garrett/Bass MS63 PCGS not choice, just as the one MS61 NGC example slightly impaired. This present example 1826/’5’ $2.5 MS61 PCGS CAC has multiple cool factor going for it as the key to the series, a CAC Top Pop, one of the lowest mintage Business Strike in all $2.5 series, and most importantly it has original surface which is quintessential for early gold. Paradime Coins is pleased to offer this trophy of a coin and the key rarity for the Capped Bust Quarter Eagle series and for all intents and purposes in most eyes the finest.
