1826/6 $2.5 AU50 PCGS CAC
1826/6 $2.5 Capped Bust Quarter Eagle Is The Single Rarest Date For the Entire Series. From a mintage of just 760, the lowest for the series, only 32 are estimated today in all grades, but only 17 examples have been traced and confirmed, so the figure is more likely more than 17. A PCGS POP 1, CAC POP 1 with only 5 CAC approved examples in all grades. This exact example which was its last auction price record last sold in 2009, 14 years ago for then $23,000. Since then this example has been kept off the market and Paradime Coins is pleased to offer this example now for sale. More recently an AU55 PCGS NON-CAC sold 6 years ago for $34,075 12/17 LM, as well as a PCGS AU58 CAC the only other CAC sale sold a decade ago for $61,688 01/13 SB. CAC cites a value of $50,400 today for a AU50 CAC. The date is a High R.8 and a rarity among rarities. Known previously as 1826/5 but now categorized as 1826/6 is an extremely elusive issue. Note because of the old holder, the coin is still labelled as the 1826/5.
Because of high intrinsic metal value, most examples were hoarded or melted, creating a conditional rarity. For the entire series which only have 5 types - 1821, 1824/1, 1825, 1826/6, and 1827, all dates have small mintages between 2,000-6,000 but 1826/6 $2.5 stands above and beyond as the major rarity. This AU50 PCGS CAC which was graded in 2000, 23 years ago is in our opinion by today's grading standard very close to an AU58. Minimal wear is seen, flawless and unimpaired surface, full details on liberty's hair and nearly all feathers and wings are present on the eagle for the type. "With a wonderful green-gold example with typical bluntness on the obverse stars. The surfaces here are an even olive-gold with normal bluntness on the obverse stars..." Paradime Coins is pleased to offer this undervalued major rarity and we can certainly see the market and demand growing as more sales for this coin enters the market.
