This 1825/4/2 Capped Bust Quarter, attributed as Browning-2, offers collectors a fascinating glimpse into the Mint’s early die reuse practices and is one of the most historically intriguing overdates in the entire Capped Bust series. The coin was struck from one of two obverse dies originally prepared in 1822 and later overdated in 1824, before finally being repurposed once more for the 1825 issue—resulting in the now-recognized 1825/4/2 overdate classification. Long mislabeled in early references, this complex die linkage was conclusively identified by Steve Tompkins in his 2008 reference work Early United States Quarters: 1796–1838. Among the three known die marriages for the date, Browning-2—distinguished by its low placement of star 8 and the use of the small 5 reverse. Despite its relative accessibility within the issue, the overall survival estimate stands at just 237 coins, and high-quality examples with originality and eye appeal remain elusive. The most recent CAC-approved example was a VF35 NGC CAC that realized $1,440 06/24 ST, whilst a lower grade F15 PCGS CAC sold for $670 06/22 DL, placing this coin nicely in value between those two at around $1,000. This piece showcases fully original, uncleaned surfaces with a medium silver-gray base tone and soft charcoal and steel-blue accents and was likely in a long-term album storage. Lightly circulated yet impressively sharp for the type, the coin retains crisp detail in Liberty’s curls, the drapery clasp, and the eagle’s wings, with well-defined dentilation and smooth, matte-like fields. Offering textbook originality and strong visual balance, this classic early quarter is a prime candidate for collectors building a complete overdate set, an advanced Capped Bust quarter registry, or an early type set anchored in numismatic history. CAC Guide $850.
