PCGS
Newly discovered 1822 N-14. This 1822 Large Cent, attributed as the elusive Newcomb-14 die marriage, is one of the legendary “big three” Middle Date rarities alongside the 1825 N-5 and 1834 N-7. Certified PCGS G06, it displays pleasing originality with medium chocolate-brown and olive-brown surfaces, lighter tan-golden wear across Liberty’s profile, and subtle reddish-bronze accents along the obverse stars, while the reverse shows a mottled olive-brown and golden-tan palette with deeper shades protected within the wreath and lettering. The date and central design elements remain clear and distinct for the grade, and the coin’s smooth, problem-free texture and harmonious patina set it apart from the majority of low-grade, impaired survivors. No examples are recorded in auction at G06 or higher, with the last G04 sale tracing back to 07/15 $11,162 SB and a AG03 more recently for $9,000 01/23 SB, this example is primed for performing well. Once considered an R-8 rarity when only three were known, this famous variety—marrying an 1822 obverse shared with N-7, 8, 12, and 13 to an 1821 reverse of the N-1—remains a cornerstone challenge for specialists. With its combination of rarity, eye appeal, and problem-free surface this piece represents a significant prize and a mark of distinction for the advanced collector.
