1821 10C SMALL DATE XF45 PCGS CAC
1821 10C SMALL DATE XF45 PCGS CAC
Capped Bust Dime
JR-9. R.2. The 1821 Capped Bust Dime Small Date stands as a fascinating and scarce anomaly in U.S. numismatic history, created by a minting error in which a date punch intended for a Quarter Eagle was mistakenly used. This error resulted in a significantly smaller date with a flat-base "2" instead of the usual curl-base, creating a unique and sought-after variety within the series. Three obverse dies (LM-8, LM-9, and LM-10) feature this Small Date, adding further depth to its appeal. Of the original mintage of 1,186,512, survival estimates suggest only 150 remain today—a mere 0.013%—highlighting the rarity of this issue. Certified populations reveal that Small Date examples are far scarcer than their Large Date counterparts, with CAC certifying just three at this level, and 27 finer.
This example boasts vibrant purple natural toning, with the obverse showcasing a captivating blend of golden-brown and bronze hues transitioning to violet centers which is enhanced by traces of magenta and green. The reverse complements this with deep amber and golden hues that fade into violet, blue, and green along the edges, adding a balanced, gradient aesthetic. As an XF piece, this coin shows some luster which is seldom seen. No auction comp exists except when this exact piece sold a decade ago in 2015 for $764. CAC Price Guide now at $850 for an original coin.
