This 1812 $5 Capped Bust Half Eagle, graded XF40 CACG, presents an exceptionally original BD-2 ( High R.4) with both obverse and reverse displaying a rich, warm golden coloration that leans toward deep honey and light amber tones, complemented by subtle darker accents around the peripheries and protected areas. A few old light marks accounts for the grade. Struck from a modest mintage of just 58,087 pieces, with an estimated survival of only 525 examples across all grades, This date is made up of two varieties: the more common BD-1 with about 425 estimated and the BD-2 at about 100. Despite being 4 times rarer, there is only a small premium for the BD-2, making this variety undervalued. Representing the final year of the Capped Bust Half Eagle type, this CAC-approved example with its circulated condition is perfect for anyone not looking to spend the usual $20,000. The only relevant comp is a 1807 $5 XF45 PCGS CAC that sold for $12,000 02/26 SB. Considering this a BD-4 (R.4+) and the fact that seldom are CAC Capped Bust Half available for under $12,000, we love the value.
