The 1809/8 Capped Bust $5 Half Eagle is an extraordinary example of early U.S. gold coinage, with a limited mintage of just 33,875 and an estimated survival of only 350 pieces. Certified in an Old Fatty Soap Box Holder and endorsed by CAC for its exceptional quality, this coin far surpasses the typical eye appeal for its grade. Struck from the Bass-Dannreuther Die State a/b, it features light clash marks beneath the scroll and a prominent overdate, with remnants of an 8 clearly visible within the loop of the 9. The obverse radiates a luminous yellow-gold tone, accented by subtle orange-gold highlights and warm reddish hues near the rims, which emphasize Liberty’s cap, flowing hair, and the encircling stars. The reverse shows a vibrant yellow-gold base enriched by orange and reddish-gold highlights in the recessed areas, while a striking purplish hue draws attention to the eagle’s head, creating a dramatic focal point. The heraldic eagle is rendered with extraordinary detail, from its sharply defined feathers and polished shield to its talons clutching arrows and an olive branch. Beyond the superb eye appeal and character defining toning, 1809 $5 has for many years been elusive to collectors. The last auction record was for a similarly attractive AU58 PCGS CAC example that sold for $18,000 02/23 HA and prior in 2022 for $16,800, and with new strong CAC bids since then, this coin should serve well to a new collector. This example has it all with all the bells and whistles and we are confident even the most picky collectors will love this example.
