In the realm of diverse versions within the year, the 1806 Pointed 6, No Stems Half Dollar stands out as a widely recognized and easily distinguishable variant. Here, the 6 takes on a pointed shape, and the eagle's left talon (viewer's right) lacks a stem. The engraver's pivotal decision in shaping the 6 involved choosing between a Pointed 6 or a Knobbed 6 punch. The unintentional absence of the stem occurred because it was not part of the larger punch encompassing the eagle and clouds. In addition to this, the engraver's responsibilities extended to adding the stars in the field above the eagle and addressing the missing stem. This Draped Bust Half Dollar is an early die state piece and finding an early die state (EDS) piece is incredibly tough, as it exhibits sharp details, full fields free of lines, and a strong strike. This coin stands as a remarkably original specimen, exhibiting envelope toning and a naturally developed patina. Slight traces of friction are visible only on the highest points, making this coin more affordable while still offering the eye appeal reminiscent of a mint state example. Such coins are rare, and when they do appear, they are swiftly acquired and securely stored away for posterity. The last PCGS CAC sale was for $9,300 on 03/23 ST, while a non-CAC PCGS sold for $7,200 01/24 HA. These seldom come for sale and are usually only seen in low grades or in high Mint State.
