This fascinating 1804 Draped Bust Large Cent is a private restrike, pairing two mismatched but genuine U.S. Mint dies—an 1803-dated obverse from the S-261 marriage, manually retooled to display “1804,” and a reverse die originally used for the 1820 N-12 variety. Produced outside the Mint likely 1860, this curious amalgamation has long appealed to specialists for its distinctive backstory and for offering an accessible proxy to the prohibitively rare original 1804 cent. Estimated to survive in just 1,000 pieces, this Premium Gem presents luminous tan-brown surfaces accented by striking toning: This 1804 1C Private Restrike MS66 BN PCGS CAC coin shows vibrant colors on the front, including magenta, violet, cobalt, and rose, with a textured surface and some flaws typical of its type. The back has a smoother finish with soft pastel shades like silvery peach and rose-gold around the “ONE CENT” and wreath design. Steel-gray and purplish accents nestle into the legend, while faint micro-pitting and polish lines confirm the restrike nature. With only 8 graded by PCGS and none finer, and just 3 CAC-approved at this level (none higher), this specimen stands among the elite survivors. Most importantly this coin is pedigreed to the famed Eliasberg Collection and in our opinion this coin should be graded as a RB ( Red Brown ) designation.
