The 1803/2 $5 Draped Bust Half Eagle is a significant early U.S. gold issue featuring a prominent overdate, reflecting the Mint’s practice of repurposing and modifying dies during its formative years. This 1803/2 Draped Bust Half Eagle, Type 2 with Heraldic Eagle reverse, is a beautifully original Mint State example that far exceeds typical expectations for the MS61 grade and stands as a highly appealing survivor of early U.S. gold. All 1803 half eagles are overdates. The coin is awash in rich caramel-gold color accented by deeper honey and muted orange tones, while active mint luster blooms across the fields. From an original mintage of 33,506 pieces, the survival of this issue is estimated at approximately 550 examples in all grades, with a modest number known in Uncirculated condition, making it a perennial favorite among advanced numismatists. Certified MS61 by PCGS and approved by CAC, with a CAC population of just 11 in this grade and 35 finer, no PCGS CAC-approved MS61 example has appeared at public auction though a choice NGC CAC did for $22,800 11/25 SB.
