Last Year Issue. This 1803 Draped Bust Silver Dollar with the Large 3 date, is graded VF35 by PCGS and approved by CAC. Among all six known die varieties of the issue, Large 3 has an estimated 1,250 out of a total mintage of 85,634. This example is particularly choice for the grade, with no distracting marks and bold definition across both sides. The obverse is enveloped in pewter-gray and lilac hues with iridescent accents of rose, champagne-gold, and bronze concentrated around LIBERTY and the portrait. A rich interplay of olive and steel toning further enhances the curls and fields, which retain faint satiny luster in recessed areas. The reverse shows dove-gray toning punctuated by olive-gold, aquamarine, and violet near the eagle’s wings and cloud arc. With a CAC population of just 8 in this grade with 34 higher, this coin sits in the upper echelon of eye appeal for the issue. As silver dollars ceased regular production after 1803 and were diverted to export trade, examples like this have become highly sought-after among early dollar and type collectors alike. PCGS Price Guide lists this coin at $5,000, while CAC values it at $4,550, but none have sold recently publicly. A similar 1803 $1 NGC VF35 CAC recently sold privately for $5,750 from another dealer.
