The 1802/1 Capped Bust $5 half eagle is a historically important early overdate issue from the formative years of U.S. gold coinage, reflecting the Mint’s practice of repunching prior-dated dies to conserve resources. There are 5 varieties for the date, BD-1, BD-2 (Both are High R.4), and BD-3, BD-4 and BD-5 ( all three R.7) This BD-2, High R.4 example, graded VG10 by PCGS and approved by CAC, presents a pleasingly original appearance with rich, even peach-gold coloration that deepens toward the peripheries. On the obverse, Liberty’s portrait is smoothly worn yet clearly outlined, with the overdate still evident and the surrounding stars and LIBERTY remaining bold for the grade. The fields show uniform circulation consistent with honest use and are free of distracting impairments with a hint of toning. This is one of the most affordable CAC Heraldic Half Eagle you can acquire today considering 450 are estimated today in all grades and is rarer than 1800, 1803/2, 1806 Rounded and 1806 Pointed $5. Finding a CAC example for this type under $10,000 is a major feat, and the most affordable examples would typically be a VF CAC example that will sell for around $9,500.
