The 1800 Draped Bust $5 Gold Half Eagle is an exceptional example of early U.S. coinage, showcasing both age and historical preservation. With an estimated survival of only 600 pieces and a CAC population of just one in this grade and lowest at that, this coin stands out as a highly desirable specimen. 1800 $5 is actually rarer than 1803/2 and 1806/5 $5. The coin displays a rich golden-yellow hue, complemented by deeper tones in recessed areas and subtle lighter highlights that enhance its visual appeal. Its smooth yet slightly granular texture is characteristic of early minting, with well-preserved design details, including Liberty's profile and sharply defined stars. Both sides exhibit honest wear, with intact rims and edges. Most uniquely, however, early gold is seldom seen with original patina and skin, and this coin has just that. Finding another CAC Draped Bust $5 under $10,000 is nearly impossible today, and as such no auction comps exists. However, comparable 1807 $5 VF35 NGC CAC sold twice for $8,100 and $9,000 02/23 HA and 02/22 HA. Its been quite a well since then and today demand has surely increased.
