1800 $1 BB-182 (R.6) VF35 PCGS CAC EX HESSELGESSER

This 1800 Draped Bust Silver Dollar is the elusive B-2, BB-182 variety, R.6, a Type 2 Heraldic Eagle reverse die pairing recognized for its distinct Medium Wide Date configuration, R in Liberty repunched and a die-crack is sene through the first A in America. Struck in Philadelphia, BB-182 is a significant rarity in the series long heralded in fact as unique by both J.W. Haseltine and M.H. Bolender. When Bolender's first book was published in 1950 he stated it was in fact unique. Today there have been a few more and carries a Rarity-6 designation. PCGS CoinFacts estimates just 20–30 survivors in all grades, elevating this as a highly important die marriage within the Draped Bust dollar series, and one of the great die rarities for the series. Certified PCGS VF35 and approved by CAC, the only CAC BB-182 as most have hairlines and have been cleaned. This Hesselgesser Collection example exhibits balanced wear and exceptional originality. The obverse is bathed in warm taupe hues, accented by rose-gold and lilac overtones near the stars and lettering. On the reverse, tones deepen to charcoal-silver, with olive, copper-gold, and iridescent blue forming a subtle peripheral halo. PCGS Price Guide lists the variety at $5,000 in VF35 whilst a R.1 at $4,500, clearly the Price Guides do not reflect true nature of the rarity. Nonetheless, a lower graded 1800 $1 VF30 PCGS CAC R.3 sold most recently for $4,800 11/24. The fact that we are selling this R.6 and higher grade than the VF30 for a normal 1800 $1 VF35 PCGS CAC represents excellent value not only for advanced collectors of early dollars or Draped Bust die marriages, but for its pedigree, originality, and visual sophistication.
