The 1799/8 Draped Bust Dollar with the distinctive 15 Stars reverse is a remarkable testament to the resourcefulness and challenges of the early U.S. Mint. With a CAC population of just 2 in its grade and only 6 finer for the entire overdate, this important piece represents an exceptional opportunity for advanced collectors of early American coinage. The obverse, originally engraved with a 1798 date and later modified to reflect 1799, showcases the hallmark overdate feature with remnants of the earlier date still visible representing one of the earliest Overdates for U.S Silver Coinage. Its smooth, satiny surfaces display a captivating blend of silver-white brilliance with golden and gray undertones. The reverse, however, tells the most fascinating story, with an accidental arc of 15 stars above the heraldic eagle instead of the intended 13. To mask the error, the engraver enlarged the outermost clouds, but traces of the two additional stars remain visible, creating a uniquely unbalanced yet distinctive composition. Most attractively the coins' luster exudes mint-state appeal. Most Draped Bust Dollars typically come dark with negative eye appeal. Finding a CAC example with attractive eye appeal and one that isn't dark like this will be near impossible for the series. No CAC AU58 example has sold much less any CAC in any date for an AU58 in the past few years; however a more common date by a factor of 5, a 1798 $1 Large Eagle in AU58 PCGS CAC which was dark sold for $25,200 11/24 ST, whilst a less rare than the present example but still dark 1802 $1 Narrow Date AU58 PCGS CAC sold for $31,200 02/24 HA. A choice 1799/8 $1 15 Stars, 2 grades lower, in AU53 OGH PCGS CAC sold for $14,681 02/24 GC. This overdate is much rarer than a typical 1799 $1 with less than 1/8 the number of survivors. Safe to say these in higher grades especially in AU58 or higher never come up for sale and one should not miss the opportunity to acquire an original, lustrous CAC approved 1799/8 with one of the best eye appeal. We feel the Price Guides are off. The auction records are well above all of them.
