1799 Irregular Date 13 stars - BB-152 (R.3) - Dave Bowers writes "BB-152 is among the scarcer varieties of the year..." This example ranks as #16 in the census for the BB-152. In 1799, the U.S Mint issued two denominations that were non-gold - large cents and silver dollars, and as such silver dollars were widely commerced in the East and was also favorable overseas. This present specimen is an unbelievable Draped Bust Heraldic Eagle displaying wonderful toned colors. Seldom seen with such vivid colors. The obverse display some mixtures of cerulean and indigo blue with mint green, saffron yellow and magenta hues while the reverse show lavender and amethyst purple along with some mint green. There is no relevant comparison except for a similarly rare and toned 1801 $1 XF45 PCGS CAC for $11,400 03/25 HA, we find ours still more attractive by a factor of 10. Typical Draped Bust Dollars XF45 PCGS CAC are now selling for approximately $8,000. Considering the toning, eye appeal, we cant recommend this for a Type Set enough. Interestingly, this coin also features a late die state where the obverse die is shattered with several prominent die cracks, whilst the reverse shows a die crack through ES OF, another through the right wing and field below AMER, and a heavy die flaw joining the stem end to the border. The reverse die has been lapped and this example is an IV late die state seen for this variety just for added measure to make this coin even more remarkable.
