This 1798/7 Draped Bust Dime, featuring the distinctive 16 Stars Reverse and certified VG10 by PCGS in an early-generation Old Green Holder, represents a highly collectible and historically significant early U.S. dime variety. Struck from a leftover 1797 obverse die, the date was overpunched with a comically undersized 8—a detail so visually jarring that numismatist Walter Breen noted it may have influenced engraver Robert Scot’s later habit of omitting final digits to avoid overdate errors. The reverse die is equally noteworthy, originally used to strike 1797 Quarter Eagles (BD-1), highlighting the Mint’s pragmatic approach to die reuse during the early Federal period. Of the 27,550 dimes struck in 1798, only four die marriages are known, with this JR-1 variety being the only overdate paired with the 16 Stars Reverse. The coin itself exhibits soft slate-gray and olive-silver hues with even wear across both sides. Liberty’s profile and hair details remain outlined, while the 16-star arc around the obverse periphery remains fully legible. The reverse displays complete outlines of the eagle and shield against a base of dove-gray patina with charcoal accents nestled in protected areas. Smooth, undisturbed surfaces and a well-centered strike elevate its visual appeal well beyond typical VG examples. With a survival estimate of just 200 coins in all grades, only recent APR was a CAC example for $3,600 04/25 HA.
