The 1798/7 $10 9x4 Stars (BD-1) Eagle is recognized as one of the rarest and most important issues of the early United States gold series, combining the coveted overdate feature with the distinctive 9 stars left and 4 stars right obverse arrangement unique to this variety. Struck from a remarkably limited mintage of just 900 pieces, the issue survives today in an estimated population of only approximately 90 examples across all grades, firmly establishing it as a significant rarity within early federal gold coinage. Certified VF30 by PCGS, this example presents strong overall detail for the grade, with the obverse displaying pleasing medium gold coloration accented by deeper olive-gold undertones around portions of the stars and lettering. Light, even wear is accompanied by early gold patina that display the character expected of an eighteenth-century survivor. The 1798/7 Eagle with the 9x4 Stars arrangement is one of the key early Heraldic Eagle gold issues and a major Red Book variety in the early $10 series, with the overdate and unique star configuration generating substantial demand among advanced early gold specialists. Examples are very scarce yet highly collectible, and a VF30 certified specimen represents an important and desirable mid-grade survivor with enough remaining detail to clearly showcase the defining attributes of this celebrated variety. PCGS Price Guide value is listed at $52,500, while the certified population stands at just 2 at VF30 and 37 graded numerically by PCGS overall, further underscoring the issue’s exceptional scarcity and long-term collector appeal.
