The 1797 Liberty Cap Right Half Cent is an iconic early copper issue, struck from a modest mintage of just 127,840 pieces, with an estimated 200 examples surviving across all grades. This example features the famed "1 Over 1" die variety, one of the most dramatic and visually striking blundered date errors in all of U.S. coinage. The secondary "1" is clearly visible above the final digit, with its thinner profile and absence of bottom serifs indicating an incomplete attempt at effacement—an oversight so bold that Ed. Frossard initially mistook it for a die break in his 1879 commentary. Most known examples of this variety are believed to be struck over cut-down Talbot, Allum & Lee tokens (Breen’s 1c attribution), though this piece shows no visible undertype—supporting the theory, as advanced by Manley, that many such pieces were struck on rolled copper planchet stock rather than true virgin blanks. This particular example displays smooth, original surfaces in a consistent brown tone with olive-bronze undertones, honest wear, and strong visual appeal for the grade. The date is bold, and key reverse elements such as the denomination and wreath remain discernible. While well-worn, the coin is free from any signs of cleaning or damage and exhibits the classic surface texture sought by advanced early copper specialists. The PCGS Price Guide lists the variety at $1,250, whilst CAC reports just 2 coins in this grade and 12 finer, with no sales recorded for CAC. Bear in mind, that CAC examples of this issue trade at double non-CAC: the F15 PCGS CAC at $3,120 07/25 HA and the VF20 PCGS CAC at $4,080 10/25 HA.
