1797 1/2C 1 ABOVE 1 FR02 PCGS

1797 Half Cent 1 Above 1 has an estimated survival of only 200 coins. 1797 1/2 C is both rare and undervalued and seldom seen without issues. A superb example and apt for a Low Ball set, this coin boasts a a rich brown color and remarkable surface quality for the type. It is an important piece of early U.S. coinage history, particularly significant for half cent collectors. In 1795, Mint engravers reduced the size of Liberty's head on half cents, and by 1797, several unique varieties emerged. These included the "1 over 1" variety (where the first numeral in the date was punched too high), the rare "Gripped Edge" (an experimental edge-marking technique), and the "Lettered Edge" (indicating planchets too thin for edge lettering). The only relevant comp is a FR02 PCGS that sold for $408 01/25 ST for a different example, and a P01 PCGS for $780 03/25 HA.
