1796 10C JR-3 MS63 PCGS CAC EX WHITNEY/"MR. 1796"

The 1796 Draped Bust Dime is a landmark issue in U.S. numismatics, representing the first year of the denomination's production and a key moment in early American coinage. With a mintage of 22,135 and an estimated survival of only 850 examples, this issue is highly sought after, particularly in Mint State, where specimens are exceedingly scarce. Six known die varieties exist, all of which are considered rare with this the JR-3 (R.5), the second rarest. This is not your typical JR-1 variety, and these are eagerly sought after, more importantly this has one of the most important pedigree for a 1796 date issue. Belonging to the famed "Mr. 1796" THE JOHN WHITNEY WALTER COLLECTION, as a first-year type coin, the 1796 Draped Bust Dime is an essential acquisition for serious collectors of early U.S. coinage, and with only 3 CAC-approved examples at this grade and just 14 finer. But beyond that, as a JR-3 in UNC, we could only locate two JR-3(R.5) sales: One was a NON-CAC NGC MS63 that sold 5 years ago for $43,200 11/2021 HA, and one in MS61 PCGS more recently also a NON-CAC for $48,000 08/24 SB. Today with a CAC Price Guide of $57,000 for JR-3, this dime exhibits proof-like surface over golden, russet, and silver toning that enhances its already impressive eye appeal. Most importantly the pedigree of this coin for a 1796 issue is perhaps most important.  Considering the pedigree, quality, variety and how a MS61 non-CAC JR-3 sold for $48,000, we firmly believe this to be an incredible purchase representing strong value.
