Pop 2 and Lowest at CAC. The 1796 Half Cent with Pole has been a key date in the series since the 1850s. Two different obverse dies were used for this year, resulting in two distinct varieties: the With Pole and the No Pole. It is believed that no more than 110 examples of the 1796 half cent remain in existence, encompassing both the No Pole and With Pole varieties! While a few high-grade Mint State specimens are known, they are typically beyond the reach of most collectors. This attractive AG piece, however, stands out with exceptional surfaces for the grade, far surpassing the typical quality seen for the issue. Rarely seen with a CAC endorsement( in fact this coin is only 1 of 10 in all grades) this coin has earned the respect of coin collectors due to its rich chocolate brown coloration and unusually smooth surfaces. Unlike most examples, this coin remains notably free from such imperfections. The design elements are all clear and present. This 1796 Half Cent with Pole, C-2, B-2, High R.4 offers an excellent opportunity for collectors to acquire a well-preserved PCGS-graded example without the sharp price jump seen in higher grades. At its grade, this piece is particularly choice, standing apart from the typical dark, granular, and heavily worn examples that lack clear definition. This coin is a Pop 2 and the Lowest with only 12 CAC coins finer, though we firmly believe this includes resubmissions and is more than likely approximately 9 or 10 CAC in all grades today.
