The 1795 Large Cent with a mintage of 501,500 and an estimated survival of just 1,000 pieces—representing a mere 0.199% of the original production. By 1795, the U.S. Mint reduced the weight of Large Cents as a cost-saving measure, resulting in thinner planchets without edge lettering, simplifying the production process. Despite this adjustment, the public readily accepted the lighter coins, setting a new standard that remained until 1857. This particular example displays a rich, earthy brown patina indicative of well-preserved aged copper, with smooth surfaces showing evidence of extensive circulation, including wear and minor abrasions.
