A beautifully toned and highly original example of America’s first silver dollar type. The obverse showcases rich steel-gray and dove-gray surfaces accented by iridescent undertones of aqua-blue, rose-gold, and soft violet toning concentrated along the borders and surrounding the stars. The reverse is equally appealing, exhibiting vibrant peripheral blue and copper-gold toning surrounding the wreath and eagle, with deeper charcoal-gray coloration dominating the centers. The eagle retains strong feather definition for the XF40 grade, and the wreath elements remain crisply outlined with balanced wear across the high points. Both sides display excellent originality with wholesome surfaces and strong visual character that advanced early dollar collectors continually seek. Struck during the second and far more substantial year of Flowing Hair dollar production, the 1795 issue fulfilled the young nation’s urgent need for a circulating silver dollar and survives today in far smaller numbers than its original mintage of 160,295 pieces would suggest.
