The 1795 Draped Bust dollar (off-center strike) is a highly important early federal issue, produced during the formative years of the United States Mint when coining technology was still evolving, resulting in distinctive characteristics such as the present misalignment. This desirable Small Eagle type example, struck from a mintage of 42,738 pieces with an estimated 900 survivors, represents a premium quality Extremely Fine coin that will appeal to specialists. The obverse reveals a pleasing, original silver-gray base with soft charcoal and dove-gray accents, the off-center strike most evident along the border where the denticles drift unevenly, yet the central design remains well balanced with Liberty’s portrait sharply outlined for the grade. Hair curls retain strong interior detail, and the drapery folds are clearly defined, while the fields show moderate, even wear. Overall, this is a well-preserved and visually engaging example of a perennially popular early dollar type. Last XF40 PCGS CAC sold for $16,800 08/23 HA for an NGC CAC piece three years ago that was slightly dark. Since then more recent CAC have sold - VF30 PCGS CAC - $12,763 03/26 GC and XF45+ PCGS CAC - $27,937 07/25 GC and an AU50 PCGS CAC is available for approximately $37,250 on the market now. The Price Guides for high quality, original examples need to be updated on this issue; however, auction comps are reflected in the true rarity of this coin.
