This 1795 Flowing Hair Silver Dollar attributed as the highly desirable Three Leaves Reverse variety, stands as a significant artifact from the early years of the United States Mint’s silver dollar production. Recognized as one of just five die marriages out of the 17 known for this date to feature the distinctive three-leaf branch beneath the eagle's wings, this Guide Book-listed variety remains a cornerstone for specialists in early Federal coinage. Production of silver dollars had been halted from late 1794 until May 1795 due to technical challenges, leading to the construction of a larger screw press specifically designed for the striking of silver dollars. The Mint resumed operations on May 6, 1795, with the delivery of 3,810 coins on the first day alone—more than double the previous year’s output. While official Mint records report 203,033 silver dollars dated 1795, research by Q. David Bowers suggests that approximately 280,000 Flowing Hair dollars were ultimately produced, with some dies reused in subsequent years to satisfy demand. Of these, only a fraction bear the Three Leaves Reverse, heightening the appeal and rarity of this variety among collectors. Presenting with stable, original antique silver-gray surfaces, this piece features graceful peripheral toning in pastel blue, golden-russet, and soft sea-green, accented by delicate lavender and steel-blue hues in the protected areas. Honest, circulated wear softens the high points while retaining the integrity of Liberty’s portrait, the legends, and the eagle design. The fields show natural planchet texture and faint environmental marks typical of early silver coinage. With a PCGS Price Guide of $8,250, this example represents an outstanding opportunity for the advanced collector seeking a well-preserved, toned and type Flowing Hair dollar.
