Pop 1 and the Lowest at CAC. The 1795 Half Cent is a fascinating example of early U.S. coinage, notable for its diverse varieties, die states, and the transition in planchet weight that influenced its design. This year saw the introduction of both Lettered Edge and Plain Edge varieties, reflecting the Mint's adaptation to a weight reduction from 104 to 84 grains. Major varieties include the "Lettered Edge, With Pole," the rare "Lettered Edge, Punctuated Date," the "Plain Edge, Punctuated Date," and the distinct "Plain Edge, No Pole," which originated from an engraving omission later corrected to include the pole. These varieties are further categorized under the Cohen attribution system, offering collectors a detailed framework for identification. The coin exemplifies early minting challenges, including die defects like the punctuated date and the practical difficulties of transitioning to thinner planchets. This CAC-certified example, the sole in its population, features a warm golden-brown patina with natural aging variations, from lighter tan to darker gray-brown, complemented by areas of blackish spotting and faint gray tones. While showing significant wear, the devices retain strong outlines, and the strike is well-centered, making it a visually compelling piece for advanced collectors or as a representative of early U.S. copper coinage. The most relevant auction comp is for a non-CAC G06 that sold for $1,125 10/25 DL.
