The 1795 1/2C Plain Edge, No Pole, BN Liberty Cap Right Half Cent C-6a is an important and highly sought-after issue in early American copper coinage, with a survival estimate of just 300 pieces. This Plain Edge No Pole Half Cent is one of several notable combinations from the year, including Lettered Edge vs. Plain Edge, With Pole vs. No Pole, and Punctuated Date vs. Normal Date. The Plain Edge variety emerged when the Mint reduced the planchet weight from 104 grains to 84 grains, making edge lettering impractical. The No Pole variant resulted from an engraver’s omission, with some With Pole examples sharing a die where the feature was later added. This Choice AU specimen, was struck on an undertype from a cut-down Talbot, Allum & Lee token, and displays exceptional chocolate-brown and blue-steel patina with nearly full luster, further enhanced by subtle auburn, violet, and olive hues. The reverse displays a crisply detailed wreath with warm auburn and deep brown accents, contrasting beautifully with steel-blue highlights along the lettering and design elements. A faint satin sheen and smooth, satiny texture confirm its superior preservation and originality. Certified in an Old Green Holder (OGH) and endorsed by both PCGS and CAC, this example ranks among the most desirable survivors, with a PCGS population of 5/32 and a CAC population of 2/7. Notably, an AU55 CAC example sold for $18,000 01/25 HA, though no sale record exists for a CAC AU53. With outstanding originality, actual color and eye appeal that arguably positions it as an AU55 or finer candidate in today’s grading standards, this in terms of how often they become available is one of the rarest in this group.
