R.5 ( O-105) Among the earliest coins struck by the United States Mint, the 1794 Flowing Hair Half Dollar stands as a cornerstone of American numismatics. With a limited mintage of just 23,464 pieces, surviving examples are in steady demand among early type collectors and variety specialists alike. This example, attributed to the Overton-105 die pair, is identifiable by the distinct positioning of stars 1, 2, and 15—features that clearly separate it from the more frequently encountered O-101 and O-101a marriages. The surfaces display smooth, even wear consistent with the assigned VG10 grade, with the obverse retaining a blend of medium steel-gray, soft cocoa, and olive overtones, accented by faint rose near LIBERTY. The coin is free of damage, cleaning, or harsh marks, and the surface texture is matte and stable with natural granularity typical of the era’s copper-silver alloy. Certified VG10 by PCGS and approved by CAC, this piece is the only CAC-stickered example recorded for the O-105 die variety in this grade though some CAC are known that are not attributed. No CAC example 1794 in similar grade has sold much less a R.5; however in lower grade and a lower R.3, an example sold for $6,600 01/24 HA with none since. Considering this variety has a PCGS Price Guide at $9,500, a higher grade than the aforementioned and a R.5, we find this representing excellent value for the price offered.
