R.5, with a bisecting die crack, this 1793 Liberty Cap Cent, attributed as Sheldon-14 and certified P01 by PCGS, represents a remarkable survival from the first year of official U.S. large cent production and the final subtype in the iconic 1793 series. With a reported mintage of just 11,056 pieces, the Type 3 “Liberty Cap, Beaded Border” cent is a landmark issue in American numismatics, and examples in any grade are increasingly difficult to obtain. Certified examples at the basal P01 level are exceedingly rare—only one prior auction record exists in this grade, a 2015 Heritage sale, 10 years ago. The next recorded appearance for the variety occurs at the G04 level which clearly has some signs of corrosion for $10,800 08/25 HA. The texture is characteristic of early copper subjected to prolonged circulation, with soft, granular recesses along the peripheries and smoother high points across the fields. For collectors focused on provenance, early U.S. federal issues, or assembling certified lowball sets, this piece offers a uniquely compelling opportunity. With only approximately 21 total examples in all grades for the S-14 die marriage, the coin ranks among the rarest certified survivors in this basal condition. It is an unembellished, completely original representative of a foundational American issue—steeped in history, rich in texture, and anchored by the integrity of PCGS certification.
