1829–1834 $2.50 Capped Bust, Reduced Diameter Quarter Eagle — Early U.S. Gold Coin
The Capped Bust, Reduced Diameter Quarter Eagle of 1829–1834 marks a pivotal evolution in early U.S. gold coinage. While the design continues the artistry of John Reich’s Capped Bust type (1821–1827), this new subtype introduced a major technical innovation — the close collar, which fixed the coin’s diameter and standardized its dimensions. This change also replaced the earlier tooth-like denticles with a refined beaded border framed by a raised rim, giving the coin a sharper, more uniform appearance.
Subtle modifications were made to the stars, letters, and legends, each rendered in slightly smaller relief for improved definition and striking consistency. These refinements established the technical foundation that would influence all subsequent U.S. gold denominations throughout the 19th century.
Mintages across the series were exceptionally small, with no date exceeding 5,000 coins, making every issue inherently rare. All dates are considered scarce in any grade, though the 1834 issue commands notable premiums in higher Mint State levels due to collector demand and limited survival.
For advanced numismatists, problem-free, original examples are exceedingly difficult to locate. Many surviving pieces have been cleaned, repaired, or enhanced, underscoring the importance of acquiring PCGS- or NGC-certified coinswith verified originality, luster, and eye appeal.
The 1829–1834 Capped Bust, Reduced Diameter Quarter Eagle remains a cornerstone of early U.S. gold type sets, prized for its transitional design, low production, and historic role in advancing American coinage precision.
