The 1938 proof half dollars were struck at a time when proof coins were still made using traditional methods with multiple press strikes, giving them sharp details and mirror-like fields that make high-grade survivors especially appealing to collectors today. The 1938 Walking Liberty Half Dollar in PR66 PCGS CAC represents a high-end Superb Gem from a modest mintage of 8,152 pieces, with an estimated 6,875 survivors, and stands as the scarcest Proof of the type after only the 1936 and 1937 issues. Both obverse and reverse display deeply mirrored fields, especially the obverse with serious claims of CAMEO, but perhaps even the reverse and we can see someone dipping it to bring out the cameo surface. Subtle silver-gray and pale champagne toning gathers lightly at the peripheries, framing the design without diminishing the mirrors or brilliance. Last PR66 PCGS CAC sold for $1,647 04/26 HA whilst before that for $1,220 03/26 HA. CAC Price Guide $1,200. We have seen example that have cameo-surface selling for substantially more than non reflective surface hence a near two tier CAC market for this issue.
