The 1899-O Barber Dime, graded PCGS MS66+, stands as one of the finest certified survivors from the New Orleans Mint, surpassed by only 2 finer at CAC. Though 2.65 million were struck, the vast majority were lost to circulation, rendering true Mint State examples a significant rarity—especially at the Superb Gem level. This piece boasts exceptionally original surfaces, with softly blended golden-tan, olive-bronze, lavender, and steel-blue toning across Liberty’s portrait, likely the product of long-term envelope or album storage. The reverse is even more dynamic, exhibiting concentric hues of champagne-gold, pale turquoise, and violet, especially rich near the wreath and mintmark. Despite the New Orleans Mint’s reputation for soft strikes, this example offers sharp definition and uncommonly bold detail across. This coin has an old-time look and in the Norweb Collection it was described as "A gem specimen, superb in every way. Light gray, golden, and delicate blue toning." With no recent sales and a PCGS Price Guide value of $9,500 and this exact example traced back to 1908( see below), this example represents a prime Registry-level opportunity for the connoisseur of original, high-grade Southern branch mint coinage.

Pedigree:

The Jett Collection.
