1879 Coiled Hair Stella Gilt also referred to "Judd-1639a" or Gilt J-1630 as opposed to Copper J-1639 is one of the most coveted and artistically significant patterns of the 19th century, this George T. Morgan–designed four-dollar Stella represents the pinnacle of gold patterns, pairing refined classical portraiture with exceptional technical execution.

Historically, the 1879 Coiled Hair Stella is among the rarest of all U.S. patterns, with only approximately 12 to 15 gold impressions believed extant (Judd-1638) and a similar estimate of about 12 as well for this gilt version. The issue saw limited distribution, likely to influential figures and members of Congress, and remains seldom encountered in today’s market. Struck in three types - copper, gilt (also referred to as gilt copper or AE) and gold. This coin is the gilt version that mirrors the gold look with warm honey-gold and amber hues dominating the high points while deeper reddish-gold and burnished tones settle into the recesses. Subtle olive-gold accents appear along the rims and peripheral devices, reinforcing the originality of the surfaces. The surfaces remain well preserved with minimal distractions, supporting the Choice Proof designation. Under angled light, the fields transition from semi-reflective to softly satiny. Bear in mind, this is not the copper version also sometimes mistaken as the J-1639 which comes in BN and RB designation, which has no where the level of demand and eye appeal that this Gilt version does yet brings high 5 and 6 figures at auction.

With a CAC population of just 3 in totality in all designations CAM and NON-CAM! 2 in non-CAM and 1 in CAM. This example is a CAC Pop 1 with 1 finer. With a CAC Price Guide value of $137,000, this specimen represents a rare opportunity to acquire a historically important and visually compelling example. Bear in mind a 1880 $4 Coiled Hair non-CAC NGC PR62 with hairlines just brought $854,000 04/26 HA and Paradime was the underbidder. No recent CAC comps are seen, but a lower grade non-CAC PCGS PR62 sold for $81,000. Safe to say these do not come up, and most certainly finding a CAC example would prove impossible.

To complete a true Type Set, you will need a Coiled Hair and this is the best value for rarity unless you don't mind spending $1,000,000 to $2,000,000 for the representation or are willing to acquire a copper bn example.
