A Gold CAC Early Seated Half with Spectacular Two-Sided Toning, Upgrade-Caliber Quality and Only One Gold CAC Example Finer.
1842 Liberty Seated Half Dollar, AU55 PCGS Gold CAC. Fabulous Early Seated Half with Exceptional Toning. The obverse displays spectacular concentric toning, with luminous ice-blue and turquoise fields framed by amber-gold, russet, and fiery orange at the borders, while violet and rose accents surround Liberty’s boldly rendered figure. The reverse exhibits vivid blue-green, lavender, rose, and golden-orange patina around a sharply detailed eagle and complete peripheral lettering. Christian Gobrecht’s Liberty Seated design had debuted on the half dollar only three years earlier, making the 1842 an early representative of one of America’s longest-running silver coinage motifs. These substantial silver coins served heavily in everyday commerce during the nation’s period of westward growth, leaving few survivors with this degree of preservation and visual character. From a mintage of 2,012,764 pieces, only about 1,200 examples are estimated to survive across all grades. Most importantly, the gold CAC sticker clearly identifies this coin not only for its eye appeal, color but also for the grade. In our opinion this is an uncirculated piece.
